The Value of Unplugging

We’ve all been there – maybe it was someone in front of you at a concert or wedding who holds up their phone to snag a picture and blocks your view, or maybe you were trying to get a friend’s attention while they were nose-deep in their Instagram feed only to be met with silence. We’ve all had moments when technology becomes more of a burden than a blessing. So when it comes to traveling the world, when should you put the screens away to soak everything in & when is it a great time to grab the phone? Here are some helpful thoughts:

WHEN TO GO TECH-FREE

1. Visiting an Impactful Place

When you’re heading to incredible places like the Garden of Gethsemane or the Lincoln Memorial, take a moment to just sit under the weight of those spaces and times, to consider the significance of what took place there. (Don’t worry, you’ll have a moment to snap some photos before heading on to your next location! But start with contemplation!)

2. During Teaching Moments

One of the most unique aspects of taking a tour with JE as opposed to traveling on your own is our incredible tour guides! They have so much knowledge about different pockets of the world & are excited to share that with you. When they’re walking you through the historic moments these sites hold, be sure to give your full attention – you’ll end up learning so much!

3. When You Might Not Normally Disconnect

There’s something so relaxing & refreshing about unplugging for a bit while you’re on a trip. While you’re exploring, learning, & serving, take a break from your normal digital routine to set aside stresses & distractions. You’ll be amazed at how much more you notice & experience when you’re unplugged.

WHEN TO GRAB THE PHONE

1. Snap That Pic!

There’s certainly nothing wrong with taking some visual memories home with you! After you’ve taken things in & spent a moment just looking & reflecting, grab your phone or camera & snag a few photos to help you remember what you’ve experienced! (& yes, feel free to grab one for the ‘gram too!)

2. Look It Up

Every corner of the world is jam-packed with incredible history & culture! Want to know more about something you saw or heard? The next time you have WiFi, head to Google to look it up!

3. Set the Tone

Fill those rides on the plane, train, or bus by setting the vibe for your trip! Heading to different spots around D.C.? Listen to MLK’s I Have A Dream speech. About to explore Belize? Pop in an upbeat, beach-y playlist! Making your way to the Holy Land? Turn up your favorite worship songs or a podcast that gets you excited to experience Scripture in a new way!

4. Connect with Fellow Travelers!

Use your free time to bond with new (or old) friends! Download a few fun games like HeadsUp on your phone before you leave & play together.

5. Say Hi to Mom!

You know your momma (& the other people in your life who love you most) will love to get a text or picture here & there checking in & letting her know you’re having a blast!

Whether you’re traveling state-side or abroad, use your trip as a time to take a break from the constant busyness of everyday life. So yes, take the pictures, but also take the time to really experience everything there is to see on your tour – you may be amazed at what you find!
