Our JE travel experts share their insights on their favorite local experiences!
Traveling through Ancient Greece is one of the most incredible experiences you will have. Seeing the steep contrast between ancient cultures and modern developments is quite a fascinating juxtaposition. Every time I travel through Greece I find new and exciting ways to experience Greek culture. Here are five ways you can get the most out of your next trip to Greece.
1. Try some mystery food! I recommend the Moussaka!
On every trip, I try to eat something new. Don’t ask what is in it. Just try it! I bet you will find some new favorite foods. Enjoying local cuisine will allow you to experience life as a local and expand your tastes. Some other great options are the famous gyros, souvlakia, dolma, and baklava.
2. Enjoy Panoramic Views at Meteora!
The monasteries at Meteora are absolutely incredible to see. These Eastern Orthodox monasteries, some dating back to the 14th century, were built in the rock formations of Meteora. You could explore this area for days, but you must stop at least for the panoramic view of Meteora Valley.

3. Read Acts 17 on Mars Hill!
The Bible will come alive for you as you stand on Mars Hill (Areopagus) and read about the Apostle Paul’s visit to the very same place. You can imagine how he pointed to all the idols in the Agora below the hill emphasizing his message. Take time to sit and reflect on Paul’s heart for the Greeks.

4. Study up on local history and culture!
Before you travel, do some research on the local history and culture. You never know what you might be driving by. There is so much history in Greece that has influenced American culture. Then when you see incredible sites like the famous Battle of Thermopylae, you can stop and be inspired by their bravery. You won’t regret it!

5. Explore the Plaka District!
The Plaka District is a very colorful and historic area under the Acropolis hill. There are many different shops to explore and cafés to enjoy lunch. I personally recommend taking a minute to enjoy a coffee and the bustling atmosphere. Keep an eye out for neighborhood cats looking for snacks! You may even want to journey into Monastiraki and visit the Poet Sandal-maker!
