EXPLORING AMERICA: TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMMUNITY
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
― Benjamin Franklin
Experiential learning creates an opportunity for students to engage culture and to apply academic understandings through hands-on experience. For International Students in the United States for the first time, learning about American culture through a textbook will only take them so far. Learning about America through personal experience and travel, however, will inspire and excite your International Students, and help them to truly understand our great country.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER… Hands-on learning is heightened when students are able to perform certain aspects of an assigned task themselves. There are definite benefits that can be realized in the process. These benefits directly correspond to in-depth travel opportunities like the ones Joshua Expeditions offers. Travel is the most hands-on type of learning. It’s the process of encouraging students to engage, face to face, with historical sites, and to put themselves in the shoes of our ancestors in order to truly experience history.
1. Greater Retention of Material
Students who practice what they’re learning in a hands-on environment can often retain three and half times as much as opposed to just sitting in a lecture room and listening intently. Imagine reading a book about the Battle of Gettysburg, and then getting the chance to step on the actual field where the battle took place. Names and events are given a visceral context, and a deeper understanding occurs.
2. Personal Guidance from a Caring Instructor
Personal guidance can mean a lot to a student if they have confidence in the teaching methods of their instructor. Joshua Expeditions chooses guides who have a passion for inspiring, motivating, and teaching students about the world as they experience it together.
3. Stimulated Learning
A hands-on learning environment can quite often stimulate a student to learn as much as possible, even after the trip is over. Many times students leave a Joshua Expeditions trip inspired to dig deeper into the sites that they have seen and the history that they have learned about. Besides educating students on specific topics and events, Joshua Expeditions tours encourage students to treat every travel opportunity as a learning experience.
4. Critical Thinking Skills that can Be Developed
Critical thinking skills can be leveraged for anything one does in life. In the classroom, students are taught not just to rely on memory and attention. A goal of hands-on learning is the expectation that students will learn to make the on-the-spot decisions that can affect the desired outcome. Being away from home, and out in the world, students grow in confidence with each new place that they visit.
